The island's breaks
Seven waves, three coasts, one ocean with nothing between here and Antarctica. Tap a pin to read the break — swell, wind, tide and who it's for.
Mauritius surf breaks guide
Explore each break below, or use the map above. Conditions vary; ask experienced local surfers before paddling out.
Tamarin Bay · Black River · west coast
River-mouth peaks — lefts & rights · Intermediate +
Tamarin Bay offers opportunities to learn and progress in smaller conditions, with guidance from experienced local surfers. As the swell builds, its river-mouth peaks become more demanding. Match the conditions to your ability, respect local priority and ask about currents and reef before paddling out.
One Eye · Le Morne · south-west
Fast hollow left — shallow reef · Experts only
The island's world-class wave, named for the 'eye' that appears in Le Morne mountain when you sit in the right take-off spot. Racing, square barrels over live coral — the wave on our badge.
Manawa · Le Morne · outer reef
Big open-face left · Intermediate +
Half a kilometre off the peninsula, Manawa is the long, open wall — a soft-breaking left that holds serious size. The longboarders' and big-turn stop of the tour.
Small Reef · Le Morne · inside lagoon edge
Mellow left · Progressing surfers
The training wall. A softer left on the lagoon edge south of One Eye, with an easy channel paddle — where the island's juniors learn reef surfing before graduating next door.
Baie du Cap · Macondé · south-west
Wrapping point lefts · Intermediate +
Under the hairpin cliff at Macondé, a fickle point-style left wraps along the bay. Needs the right angle of west in the swell — when it lines up, it's the longest ride on the island.
Îlot Sancho · Riambel · south coast
Reef left beside the islet · Intermediate +
The most consistent wave on the wild south coast, peeling beside a tiny forested islet. Open-ocean swell with no continental shelf to slow it down — punchy, rewarding, uncrowded.
Souillac · Gris Gris · south coast
Heavy slab & cliff peaks · Experts only
Raw. The cliffs at Gris Gris take the full Indian Ocean, and the slabs below break hard and shallow. Local knowledge is not optional here — watch it from the viewpoint first.
Reef first. Respect always.
Every wave here breaks over living coral in someone else's home break. Read our etiquette guide before you paddle out — priority rules, reef care, and how not to be that surfer.
