The lineup code

Five laws, three quiz questions, one living reef. Learn the code before you paddle out — the ocean here is shared, and so are the rules.

The five laws

Know these cold.

Closest to the peak goesDeeper surfer rides; the shoulder gives way.

The surfer nearest the breaking curl has priority. One wave, one rider.

Priority is how a crowded lineup shares waves without chaos. If someone is deeper than you — closer to where the wave is breaking — it's their wave. Pull back, and your turn comes.

Test yourself

Whose wave is it?

Question 1 of 3

Two surfers paddle for the same wave. Whose is it?

The unwritten extras

And everything in between.

•Don't snake

Paddling around someone to steal the inside position is a drop-in with extra steps. Wait your turn in the rotation.

•Respect the locals

Every break has surfers who've read it for decades. Watch first, smile, earn waves — entitlement gets you nothing here.

•Know your limits

One Eye at 8 ft is not the day to find out. The map on our Surf Spots page tells you who each wave is for — trust it.

•Call your line

On an A-frame peak, a simple “left!” or “right!” means two surfers ride one wave instead of ruining it.

•Help anyone in trouble

Leashes snap, reefs cut, currents win. If someone's in trouble, their wave count stops mattering. So does yours.

•Leave it cleaner

One piece of rubbish off the beach per session. Multiply by every surfer on the island and the lagoon stays the colour on our badge.

Code learned. Now find your wave.

Seven breaks on the interactive map, each graded by who it's for — and the season calendar to watch the code in action.
